About Powder Coating

Companies increasingly specify powder coatings for its high-quality, durable finish, allowing for maximized production, improved efficiencies, and simplified environmental compliance. Used as protective as well as decorative finishes, powder coatings are available in a wide assortment of colors and textures.

How Powder Coating Works

Powder coatings are basically polymer resins combined with curatives, pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other additives. Powder coating is a solvent-free process, with no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). The ingredients are combined via melting, then ground to a fine uniform powder. A process called electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) is the preferred deposition process of coating to a metal substrate. This application method uses a spray gun, which applies an electrostatic charge to the powder particles, which are subsequently attracted to the electrically grounded part. Coated parts are transferred to a curing oven where, with the addition of heat, the material forms long chain chemistries, resulting in high cross-link density. These molecular chains are very resistant to mechanical stress. Powder coatings can also be applied to non-metallic substrates such as some plastics. Outstanding attributes of powder coatings are:

Powder coating is a durable, high-quality finish found on thousands of products ranging from household items, medical goods and products and aviation/defense parts. It provides a tough finish, while still maintaining an attractive look. Powder coated products are resistant to:

  • chemicals
  • ultraviolet rays
  • fading
  • corrosion

Types of Powder Coatings

There are two main categories of powder coatings:

1) Thermosets

2) Thermoplastics

The thermoset variety incorporates a cross-link chemistry in the formulation. When the powder is baked, it reacts with other chemical groups to polymerize, improving the performance properties. The thermoplastic variety does not undergo any additional steps during the baking process, but rather only flows out into the final coating.

The most common polymers used are polyester, polyurethane, polyester- epoxy (known as hybrid), straight fusion-bonded epoxy) and acrylics.
